Last weekend the thing I swore would never happen to me as a parent actually happened. We were at a science center in Columbus, Ohio, and we lost Amelia. We lost her. And that obviously only happens to really irresponsible parents who pay no attention and just let their kids do whatever, right? WRONG.

Change

This week I read a simple phrase…”you can’t choose your story but you can choose your song”. Right now, in this moment, you have the opportunity to choose your song – to choose how you are going to respond when hard times come. When life feels unsteady, we look to the cross for the reminder that everything is going to be alright.

Taking Risks

When I think about “High Vertical Drop-Offs”,  there are numerous situations and risks I’ve had to take that felt exactly like that. Taking that step forward or making a difficult decision in order to pursue something amazing can feel so dangerous, not knowing what’s going to happen and not knowing if you’re going to make it to your destination without falling off the edge.

Psalm 138

When you talk to God, do you approach Him with the idea that He’s joining you from far away, and that you need to catch Him up on what’s going on? Are we believing that our prayers are being answered immediately, even when we won’t understand the answer for a long time?

To my friend who is hurting

Have you reminded yourself today that He sees you too? That He knows you’re feeling that way? He knows your heart is shattered and He WILL help you pick up the pieces. As you’re pushing through, feeling like you’ve got this, are you remembering that you need His help?

Literally Pretty

I’m fairly certain that my daughter was born with more confidence than I’ve ever had in my life, and I can’t help but worry and wonder if she’ll start to notice that it’s something I struggle with.

We Are Included

Jesus has just as much love for you as he does for the next. Sometimes we live in a state of fear because we either don’t believe it’s true, or we trick ourselves into thinking we are powerful enough to make His love for us go away. Friends, we are not that powerful.

Women in Ministry

As I was scrolling Facebook yesterday, I saw an article from Relevant Magazine about women who teach, lead and preach in the church. It was centered on 5 reasons why women are needed in these roles. I can remember times when reading an article like this would make me excited, proud, and fired up to lead proudly as a woman in the spheres of influence where God has placed me. This time though, I felt uneasy about it.

My Purpose

  “You exhaust me.”

A few weeks ago, a dear friend said those words to me in a text message. You. Exhaust. Me. YIKES. Now, you know how we’re told to listen to those we trust and value……this came from one of those people! I truly haven’t stopped thinking about it since.

Grow with increasing measure

From the outside this tree was beautiful. It provided shade and we know it has probably been there for hundreds of years. But the reality was this massive tree was dying on the inside. It had sustained damage, from bugs and from lightning, and it was struggling to keep standing.

A Message for Moms

Think about the things that you say to your child every day – you are beautiful, you are handsome, good job, you are so smart, I’m so proud of you…..there are so many more. Now think about those specific words of positivity and ask yourself when the last time you said something that kind to YOURSELF.

2019 Word

As I was thinking about 2019, a word just kept coming up: GRIT. I looked up the definition of grit, and simply stated, it’s having courage and resolve, or strength of character. Wow, that sounds fun, and definitely like something I want! But then I saw the alternative definition, and immediately wanted to change my word: “to clench (the teeth), especially in order to keep one's resolve when faced with an unpleasant or painful duty.”

Am I Doing Christmas Right?

As I think back on the Christmas season this year, I feel more convicted than in years past and have wondered so many times....are we doing this right? How in the world do we incorporate the real reason for celebrating Christmas, the importance of serving others, AND the magic of being a kid who might not believe in Santa much longer…..ALL into 25 days?

Christmas Lights

At Christmas time, it’s so easy for us to get caught up in moments of frustration with crazy traffic, crowded stores, jam-packed schedules - all of these things can cause our lights to go out. Or how many of us, even this week, experienced a moment of grief, disappointment, or brokenness, or words that hurt us, that we didn’t see coming?

We see countless examples of rest in the Bible. We are reminded that rest has purpose, value and worth. In fact, we see Jesus doing something pretty radical, when He is in demand the most, and when there are crowds of people waiting to spend time with Him, He retreats, even in the midst of a hectic moment. He recognizes how He is feeling and acknowledges that He needs to spend time with His Father. So…

I know so many people who have experienced a difficult 2018. Some are celebrating their first holiday without loved ones, some are lonely and afraid of what’s next, some are just trying to keep all the balls rolling and long for a life that doesn’t feel rushed and hurried all the time. Not only will an attitude of thankfulness help during this time, but it is essential to getting through the yuck. It is when you’re in those dark places that you have the most to gain by having a thankful heart. That is when you will feel the power to heal and the power to find hope again.

During a recent conversation, I made a commitment to a co-worker that in any opportunities I have to share, whether through writing, speaking, and teaching, I will always be ME. I’m not doing this so I can impart some great wisdom on you, because I can promise you would be greatly disappointed. I’m doing this to share from my own experiences, my own shortcomings, and help you realize that we all feel inadequate, unqualified, and like an imposter at times. That whole “fake it til you make it” thing….that’s basically my life right now.

Calling

For longer than I’d like to admit, I’ve looked to others for approval – I’ve listened to their idea of what I’m good at, what my gifts are, what box I fit into, and even louder are the voices who have told me what I’m not so good at, what my gifts are not, and what boxes I definitely have no business being in. Instead of obsessing over my limitations, I want to trust that God will carry me to my purpose.

Surrendering Control

His ways are higher than my ways, and His thoughts are higher than my thoughts. That simply means that I am not here on this earth so I can fulfill all my own wants and needs. We find true freedom when we allow God to restore us to how we were always meant to be. It’s finding our own way to escape that feeling of wanting to control our lives and our destiny and remember that what we were always meant to be – or WHO we were always meant to be  - is like Jesus. Jesus was broken for others. For me. And for you.
